ABSTRACT

My direct experience in Asia began in March 1952, when I flew to Japan during

the Korean War. I have lived in Asia for more than twenty years, and have been

focused on that region almost continuously for half a century. Almost all of my

work concerning Asia has been carried out under the shadow of war; the Korean

War, the Vietnam War, and finally the Cold War, which lingers like the dirty

remnants of a melting glacier on the Korean Peninsula.
