ABSTRACT

I aim to describe ways of working in art therapy with children who have little or no sense of an ‘as if’ and to try to differentiate between this lack being one of developmental delay of a severe kind, or that of psychotic or borderline defence structures. The kinds of approaches I use with both groups, as with those who show marked autistic tendencies, are equally appropriate and helpful, in that they offer a firm base from which to begin.
