ABSTRACT
The northern section of the fertile crescent is here treated as a separate region not because of any geographical unity, nor because it formed any distinct entity in Roman times, but because in this period the whole area bore the brunt of operations by the Roman state against the only superpower capable of aggression against Rome, namely Parthia. In many ways, the region was a frontier zone throughout the early imperial period. 1
