ABSTRACT
The classification outlined in the last chapter formed the framework for the analysis of the recorded talk of the 3-year-olds in the study. Almost all the utterances could be assigned with confidence to three functions, the directive function, the interpretative function and the projective function, or to the self-maintaining use of language, which we have regarded as a realisation of the relational function.
