ABSTRACT
The EYFS review identifies ‘communication and language’ as a ‘prime’ area of learning with ‘literacy’ as one of the four specific areas of learning in which communication and language skills are applied. Tickell reports that ‘communication and language are essential foundations for children’s life, learning and success’. Concern was rightly raised in the consultation period that very young children were pressured to read and write at inappropriately young ages.
