Reading across media: the case of Wuthering Heights
Wuthering Heights is one of the most famous novels in the world. In Britain it is so well known that a mass audience can be relied on to recognize allusions like the 'Monty Python's Flying Circus' semaphore version, in which Heathcliff and Catherine stand on opposite hill-tops with semaphore flags, sending messages as follows:
Oh Catherine! Heathcliffe! [sic] Oh! Oh! Catherine! Oh! Oh! Heathcliffe!
