The deployment of TAs
In this chapter we examine the deployment of TAs in schools. We first look at debates about the role of TAs, drawing on the interview material from the case studies. The second section is the heart of the chapter, in which we examine in a systematic way the empirical evidence arising out of the DISS project on the activities of TAs, the contexts within which they work, the kinds of pupils they work with and the pupil’s role when interacting with TAs and teachers. Put simply, the aim is to arrive at an answer to the question, ‘What do TAs do?’ We end with a third section in which we look more closely at the separation of TA-supported pupils from the teacher and the curriculum, revealed by the case studies. Table 5.1 shows the data sources used in this chapter.
