ABSTRACT

Diana had sought treatment for depression after her husband’s untimely death

from a stroke when he was in his early fi fties. Treatment was successful and ther-

apy was concluded after 10 months. Two years later I received a call from her son,

George, who requested that I meet with him to discuss a serious problem that had

developed between his wife, Penny, and Diana. He said that the problem was “too

complicated” to discuss over the phone and he preferred to talk with me in person.

We arranged an appointment for later in the week.
