ABSTRACT

The previous chapter reviewed the evolution of the EU's energy policy focusing on its implications for energy security. It was briefly explained there that national preferences and decisions have often prevailed over the common interests. However, since the EU is committed to a progressive transition to a fully fledged common energy policy (CEP), it is necessary to analyse the main energy features of the member states in order to find out whether they are converging or they are following disparate paths in terms of energy security policies. In the first case, the CEP would be a goal that the EU member states are already coming closer to, while in the second case the energy policy in the EU would be more and more determined by the national interests of the more influential countries. This chapter presents a thorough analysis of the member states' energy security policies, and will be followed by some general guidelines for a European energy security policy in Chapter 12
