ABSTRACT

Environmental issues in Africa have received considerable attention in recent years. For example, the World Bank’s Africa Action Plan (World Bank, 2007a) identifies one of its goals as reducing the cost of environmental degradation and improving the management of non-renewable resources. The Action Plan states,

the Bank has valuable international knowledge on environmental matters, coupled with recent experience in building country systems for environmental safeguards. Using these resources it can help countries to develop strategies to adapt to climate change and assist them in developing action plans for sustainable environment practices in key productive sectors.
