ABSTRACT

Finger dance is a programme using multisensory stimulus and playful games to develop a child's proprioceptive awareness and foster an ability to explore objects and mark-making materials. Undertaken at least weekly, it becomes a pleasant, familiar, relaxing routine. Some of the playful finger games include elements of anticipation to help arouse interest and a sense of playfulness. The key is to activate the proprioceptors (the little joints that send messages to your brain). This helps children to get to know where their hands and fingers are in relation to their body and this, in turn, may help a child explore objects more purposefully and enable them to ‘make a mark on their world’.
