ABSTRACT

The reasons why women migrate and the reasons why they most often decide to prolong migration are crucial for understanding their relationship to their children, the nature of the communication between them and the role that media tech nologies play in these processes. This chapter examines these questions, drawing on the interviews and encounters with our participants in London and Cambridge. Although most of the interviews were with Filipina migrant workers who are also mothers, we also include material from our work with single women and some men (for more information on our sample, see Appendix). The intention is to complement the previous chapter which looked at the context of migration from the point of view of state policy and regulation by providing an ethnographic per spective on how migrants themselves understand their trajectories and decisions.
