ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the incentives and strategies that the China Democracy Party (CDP) used in its attempt to establish an alternative political Party and the methods the Party used to suppress these efforts. In addition, nearly 5% of CDP leaders had experience with labour activism. Despite repeated punishment for past political activities, or perhaps because of them, the individuals continued their efforts to bring about political change. A number of CDP leaders were also actively involved in organizing workers (CLB 1999). At the same time that members of the CDP were setting up preparatory committees in various provinces and carrying out a variety of local political activities, the Party took direct action against CDP leaders. Xu Wenli applied to the Central Committee, State Council, National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) for permission to publish a newsletter, called China Human Rights Watch.
