The Primacy of Dispositions as Virtues

In section 1 of this chapter, three possible approaches to moral agency are discussed and developed through the notions of rules, relationships, and character. In section 2, the view of morality implicit through this book-that is, the approach through character and virtues-is tested by (a) an examination of Fritz Oser’s (1994) critique of it and ( b) distinguishing virtues from personality traits. From that examination, in section 3, the argument for the primacy of dispositions in the moral life, and thereby in teaching and in the education of teachers, is developed.
