ABSTRACT

Soon, we will fashion other living things, and ultimately ourselves to suit our own designs. We will engineer bacteria to make them into factory workers, splice genes into plants to induce them to grow larger, ripen faster and keep longer, and modify animals to yield more succulent meat or even grow organs for human transplant. In short, we have the techniques to reconstitute living species in ways which far outstrip the power of traditional selective breeding…. [W]e are building the information base to apply those techniques with precision, to supplant natural selection.
