ABSTRACT

In this chapter I will address the meaning of the term postmodernism, and whether postmodernism, as a theory or cultural form, represents a development beyond the reach of Freudian psychoanalysis and whether Lacanian psychoanalysis is a postmodern form of Freudian psychoanalysis needed to address and explain the postmodern condition. At stake is the question of the varied meanings and defi nitions of both postmodernism and psychoanalysis currently available within the fi elds of philosophy, psychology, and the social sciences or humanities in general. In other words, postmodernism and psychoanalysis mean different things to different people.
