ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the interplay between socio-economic change or ‘development’ in the low-income nations of the world, their current demographic trends and the material, welfare and health situation and prospects for their older people. It aims to elucidate the complexities of the interactions and go beyond a superficial presentation of the consequences of demographic ageing. To do this, basic facts and figures are presented, with guidance as to where more detailed information may be found. Then the health and welfare situation of elderly people is considered, particularly in the light of current trends in urbanization and economic change. The final sections set out some of the policy options that face governments and public bodies in the developing world.
