ABSTRACT
The late 1950s in Ireland, North and South, gave rise to critical debates about the nature, control and function of television in both parts of Ireland. Initially, and especially in the South, the debates were primarily about structures and control: in the late 1960s, questions of content began to assume greater significance, partly because of the developing Northern Ireland political crisis, partly because of social and other changes which were ruffling old certainties.
