Europe. These essays on prisons across the world follow Howard’s descriptive method. Each addresses an individual prison and in most of them the author is either an ‘outsider’ or a foreigner, or both. Although the focus is on individual prisons, some account is taken of the wider prison system and, in at least some cases, the overall criminal justice process.
