ABSTRACT
The aim of this chapter is to explore some of the problems of the use of quantitative methods in social science. For those who read the preceding chapter, it will also serve to give more substance to what might have seemed-at least to newcomers to the subject - rather academic criticisms. While mathematical approaches are not an integral part of the philosophical and methodological positions I have attacked, the ways in which they are commonly used in social science tend to resonate with those positions.
