ABSTRACT
A third constitutive element in the republican idea is that of participation leading to a more active citizenship. The republican ideal is wary of ideas of representation and of the consequent professionalisation of politics. Rousseau provides the classic example here, with his pessimistic assessment that when people shun going to the assemblies in person, when they pay people to do so, or prefer professional armies to bearing arms themselves, the dissolution of the republic threatens.
