ABSTRACT
The new republic must be seen in the first instance as a ‘regulative idea’. This means that it is to be understood as a normative concept, which functions as a standard to judge existing institutions. The term ‘regulative idea’ comes from Kant, who used it to mean a principle applied to the present state of affairs, pointing out the direction in which reality should be transformed.2
