A typology of shopping centres

In this final section of the chapter on hierarchy we offer a classification of shopping centres. A shopping centre is defined as a development which was built and let as an entity, contains three or more retail units, and includes a purpose-built pedestrian area outside the component shops or common car parking. Most shopping centres are over 50,000 ft2 (5,000 m2) in size and that is the definition used here, although a number of specialist centres are smaller than this.
