ABSTRACT

When first meeting a class previously taught by colleagues, we are aware of particular names and characters for a variety of reasons. We are also under a certain pressure, depending on our relationship with the colleague, to corroborate or contradict their views. By going through the process of considering our own, and the pupils’ responses to the establishment phase we introduce an element of detachment, which allows a different view of the situation. This subtle change then enhances the opportunity for the new beginning being used as an opportunity for change. The alternative is for us all to be trapped into fulfilling the stereotypes already in place.
