The ‘nation’ as a ‘people’

Any analysis of whether a nation is a people for the purposes of the right to selfdetermination in international law must begin with World War I and the Peace Conference of 1919 that finally concluded it. It was in the events of the war and the peace settlement that self-determination started its transformation from political principle to its present normative status in international law.
