ABSTRACT

As in the discussion of the Early Neolithic of southern Scandinavia the main aim of this chapter will be to assess the extent to which patterns of social action and material culture in the Early Neolithic of Britain and Ireland were influenced by the pre-existing situation of the Late Mesolithic. This will be undertaken through a review of the evidence for economy, settlement, burial, monuments, exchange and warfare, ending with an examination of emergent regional traditions and the significance of this for the origins of the British and Irish Neolithic.
