ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the context in which the transformation of the machinery industry R&D institutes in China began. Two facets of this background will be introduced: the development of the industry, and the design and R&D institutions of the industry. The focus will be on the institutional aspects, but these will be related to main features of the industry’s development.
