ABSTRACT

In this chapter I selectively review developments in the school geography curriculum over a period of thirty years in order to highlight the role of values in geography education and the contribution of geography to the values education of young people. My overall purpose is to provide a values and values education context for understanding the promotion of ‘citizenship’ through geography education. I describe, therefore, some of the conceptual changes and developments in both geography and citizenship since the 1970s, which, it will be shown, intertwine and enrich each other. It will be suggested that geography provides an education in values and value-laden issues of significance to concepts of citizenship, and that citizens need geographical knowledge and understanding.
