ABSTRACT

The promotion of citizenship to the status of a foundation subject within the National Curriculum marks a significant point within the history of curriculum development in England and Wales. From the perspective of the recent review of the National Curriculum (DfEE/QCA 1999a) and for ‘Curriculum 2000’ (DfEE 1999) for post-16 students, the relationship which now exists between geography and the five crosscurriculum themes originally identified in 1991 is a complex one. The elevation of citizenship education from among these themes to a place within the statutory curriculum at key stages 3 and 4 reorientates this relationship, and encourages geography teachers to examine their role in its delivery.
