ABSTRACT
Language plays a vital role in every geography classroom. Pupils fill pages of exercise books and files with written work. They read textbooks, resource sheets, library books and worksheets. Teachers describe, explain, instruct, ask questions, encourage, reprimand and listen. Pupils listen, answer questions, discuss and sometimes ask questions.
