ABSTRACT

In this chapter I will examine the meaning of development and development education, and will raise issues and questions relating to how these are often taught today, and the potential for enhancing their position and role within the education system of the future. It so happens that, either by design or default, teaching about development in primary and secondary schools has generally been the responsibility of Geography and geography teachers, but at tertiary level the field of ‘development studies’ widens to involve practitioners from many social science disciplines, such as anthropology, economics, international relations, politics and sociology. But as such subjects are rarely taught in schools below A level, it is Geography which has a key role to play in laying the groundwork for more advanced study at a later stage.
