ABSTRACT

Many would characterize this millennium as an “Age of Progress” as they reflect on all the opportunities that have come from the explosive growth in the use of energy and materials. No other world view is as pervasive as progress, a myth that looks beneficial even when people recognize that such growth cannot continue for much longer without resulting in the collapse of the world’s supporting ecosystems. Like many others in the second half of the last century, I have been influenced by a rising tide of doubts and opposition to this tradition of progress and growth. And my curiosity has followed these doubts back to the roots of my profession: architecture. Many great journeys start almost innocently, like steps that continue down the road long after the reason for leaving has faded. I would like to share such a walk with you.
