Introduction

This section provides a brief history and overview of the key concepts and terminology commonly used in ADR – Alternative Dispute Resolution. The term ADR itself is one that has crossed the Atlantic from the USA to describe procedures other than litigation used to settle disagreement. As ADR has grown in popularity and communities begin to embrace the use of ADR, some commentators have suggested that the acronym should now stand for ‘Appropriate Dispute Resolution’.
