A systematic crackdown on crime throughout the whole of China was launched
at the end of April 1996. It was known as the ‘Strike Hard’ campaign yanda, an
abbreviation of yanli daji yanzhong xingshi fanzui huodong ‘Campaign to strike
severely at serious criminal offences’ and was initiated after a working
conference of the Bureau of Public Security, the date of which has not been
made public.
