ABSTRACT

A systematic crackdown on crime throughout the whole of China was launched

at the end of April 1996. It was known as the ‘Strike Hard’ campaign yanda, an

abbreviation of yanli daji yanzhong xingshi fanzui huodong ‘Campaign to strike

severely at serious criminal offences’ and was initiated after a working

conference of the Bureau of Public Security, the date of which has not been

made public.
