ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to identify and explore some of the issues to be taken into account when planning for teaching and learning in the music classroom. Although not overtly articulating a rationale for music education, the chapter assumes a shared understanding of the nature and purpose of music education as being, in Plummeridge’s words, ‘a way of knowing or realm of meaning … in which students come to understand the “workings” of the discipline through direct participation in musical activities’ (Plummeridge in Philpott 2001: 17).
