ABSTRACT

The following scenarios are based on actual classroom experiences, and they are typical of events taking place in schools in recent years as educators are asked to open their classrooms to students with special needs:

Scenario No. 1: Ms Kelly, the school’s music teacher, finds a note in her box on Monday morning. Three students from Mr Anderson’s special education class will be coming to music today with the second-grade class. She knows that the students in Mr Anderson’s class have severe disabilities, but she is unaware of their specific needs. Ms Kelly has an early rehearsal before the first class comes to music, so she does not have time to gather any information about these new students before they arrive.
