ABSTRACT
Literal meaning is only one aspect of verbal meaning. The meaning of a text comprises a number of different layers: referential content, emotional colouring, cultural, social and personal associations, and so on. Features that are significant on the intertextual level nearly always illustrate this fact, because they import apparently extraneous associations into the text. This many-layered nature of meaning is a crucial lexical translation issue.
