ABSTRACT

This chapter continues the exploration of teacher education in Modern Languages Across the Curriculum. It is concerned with strategies and practical activities that could create immediate opportunities for a teacher, a school or a training institution to begin to teach in this way. Several activities are included here as models for in-service or initial teaching training workshops. They are organised around three distinct aspects: ‘teachers’ knowledge bases’, ‘progression and planning’ and ‘learner strategies in MLAC’. The teacher education activities are illustrated by three practitioner examples: Kim Brown working with post-graduate trainees; Rosanna Raimato working within a whole school approach to language; and ideas from Melanie Valet in the context of cross-curricular work with other departments in her school. Each of these examples is accompanied by activities which might be used within pre-service and in-service teacher education. We conclude the chapter with some methodological principles underpinning MLAC teacher education.
