The first and most obvious question to pose here is why attempt a survey of the minor female characters at all when it is the alleged unconventionality of the heroines that appears to warrant scholarly exploration? The somewhat bald and straightforward response must be that to understand the heroines in isolation is not to understand them fully at all.
