ABSTRACT

This book, written largely by Europeans, provides an important overview of recent European research and policy developments to reduce socioeconomic inequalities in health. However, the purpose of this chapter is different: written by two non-Europeans, it aims explicitly to provide an outside view. We reflect on European policies to reduce socioeconomic inequalities in health and compare the approaches and policies outlined in this book with our Australasian and American experiences. From this perspective, we consider the strengths and weaknesses of European policy development and implementation and the possibilities for international cross-fertilization.
