ABSTRACT
I believe in practical planning theory, theory which is both grounded in practice and which helps to explain and understand practice. Theory should have a strong feeling for social reality. I concur with Alvesson and Sköldberg’s (2000: 275) view that ‘empirical material can inspire ideas and theories, endowing them with credibility, clarifying them and, in the case of theories, making them more stringent’.
