ABSTRACT

Bodement: OED cites Coleridge and Mary Russell Mitford for the earliest uses in the sense of “prophecy”, Coleridge in a translation from Heraclitus (in PW II 1007), Mitford in Our Village Series II 368 (ed 1863) first published in 1826. In 1817 Coleridge used it in Zapolya I 250 in the sense of “foreboding”: PW II 892.
