ABSTRACT
In 1980 I was seconded from the Institute of Adult Education at the University of Botswana to act as co-ordinating secretary for the experimental National Museum Open Week. As an adult educator trained in history, I became intrigued by the potential significance of cultural institutions, such as museums, in the process of national development.
