The relationship between the United States and the United Nations in the field of human rights has proved both complex and ambiguous during the past forty-five years. This troubled and shifting relationship has contributed to the crisis of multilateralism in the United States, a situation in which the United States has questioned the value of many UN programs and indeed its membership in at least parts of the organization.
