ABSTRACT

Four year olds are characteristically physically active and energetic so they need space both indoors and out in which to move freely and be spontaneous. Motor development is at an important stage so they need opportunities to practise motor skills and coordination, and to test themselves physically in a safe environment. Early years educationists are united in their plea for adequate space for these young children. Improvements in the physical environment should be made because young children are active both physically and mentally. They need space and a good quality environment both indoors and out. This is endorsed by the Select Committee: ‘Young children need space to move about freely and have direct access to a secure area for outside play’ (House of Commons, 1988, para. 5.11).
