ABSTRACT

Alcohol is a significant contributing factor in injuries and accidents in general and among alcoholics in particular (Honkanen et al. 1983, James et al 1984). It is often postulated that alcoholics incur injuries at a higher rate than their age/ gender groups, but accurate measurements of the prevalence and incidence of injury-producing accidents in this group have been difficult to obtain (NIAAA, 1983). Injuries related to alcohol misuse have significant social costs in terms of increased medical care, lost production, higher family disruption and premature death.
