ABSTRACT

The use of the word 'architecture' raises the fundamental problems addressed by this section. The word bears a resemblance to others which also stand for major classes of entities - concrete objects, phenomena or experiences - transformed by these words into abstractions. In the case of 'architecture' the entities are buildings and all their internal and external components such as rooms, courtyards, stairs, roofs, windows and gardens. Other words of this kind are 'family', standing for visible entities which may include adults, old people, children, domestic animals and servants; 'nature', standing for mountains, lakes, forests, grassland, trees, birds and animals; or 'art', standing for sculptures, paintings or photographs.
