ABSTRACT

Majorie Blumer, who wrote the following article, was born in Liverpool and has lived in London since 1965. She is now 32, and had her first epileptic attack at the age of twelve. Dismissed from teacher training college because of her epilepsy, she trained as a secretary and for a time taught typewriting at the secretarial college. Since then she has worked as a secretary for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, for St Mary’s Hospital Medical School and for a firm of foreign exchange brokers in the City of London. She is now with a large insurance company based in London and Worthing and has recently obtained a driving licence. Marjorie belongs to the British Epilepsy Association, and believes that talking openly about epilepsy will help to overcome the ignorance and prejudice shown by many people to this ‘unseen’ but very common condition.
