ABSTRACT
Ancient Greek was first written, from c. 1400 to the twelfth century BC, in the Mycenaean script known as Linear B. This is the script which was deciphered by Ventris and Chadwick in 1952. An earlier script, associated with the Minoan culture of Crete, has not been deciphered; the language it notates is probably non-Indo-European.
