ABSTRACT
Batak (also known as Toba) belongs to the Malayo-Polynesian branch of Austronesian. It is spoken by about 2½ to 3 million people in northern Sumatra. Much of the rich traditional literature of the Batak people has been recorded in a script based ultimately on an Indic model. The script is now losing ground to Roman.
